Over-The-Counter (OTC)

Many Over-the-Counter (OTC) treatment options are available at your local pharmacy or general merchandise retailer.  But it is crucial to know that no OTC or prescription options kill both lice and nits. It would be best if you had a combination of solutions to address the problem.  Read each product's specifications and instructions carefully, and talk to your local pharmacist or doctor for recommendations.

Shampoo

Shampoo is one of the first lines of defense options when going the Over the counter route.  The most common are shampoos containing medications such as pyrethrin or permethrin, which kill the lice.

Non-Prescription Medications

Getting rid of lice can cause a lot of stress. There are non-prescription medications available that are safe and effective when used as directed.

NOTES:
Skilice used to be a prescription medicine but was removed from the list in 2020.  Some websites have not updated their information and still have it listed and prescription only. Example the CDC.  The FDA announced in 2020 that the lotion will be removed from the script list.
